Vincent Bari (Barry in most eng translations) is a supporting character from Zatch Bell (Konjiki no Gash). He is 17 years old, and he first starts off as a minor antagonist seeking out Zatch for his strength, but soon becomes an unlikely ally in the later arcs, and the sequel. His spells re vortex-based, and his bookkeeper is an older man by the name of Gustav. His spellbook is the Cobalt Blue book.
Bari is a mamodo with an imp-like, armored design. It looks like he wears anavy-blue tailcoat with orange accents, and matching pants of the same color. He wears golden armored plates on his chest and stomach, looking almost like the exosxeleton of an insect ( a beetle !!). He has two large blue horns on his head, which are usually shown in front of his face. However, his horns are shown to be flexible, and can be pushed back if needed. He has pointy shoes, sharp teeth, and large, sharp eyes.
His very first apperance was in Moscow, Russia, defeating another mamodo, Donpoccho. Donpoccho begs for mercy, but he becomes enraged, and chastises him for it. He sees him as unfit to become king due to his pleading, and mercilessly burns his spellbook. Later on, he's seen walking through the snowy forest with Gustav, fuming from the fight. He whines about not finding any strong opponents, and how he hates how weaklings are participating in the tournament. Gustav, like the exhausted father he is, questions Bari and his motives. He calls him a brat, asking him what he actually wants to achive in life, to which Bari is unable to properly answer, only stating how he wats someone strong to fight. Gustav then speaks of a strong opponent mentioned by one of the opponents they had defeated, and Bari is immediately interested. The opponent in question is the main character of the series, Zatch Bell. The two take a flight to Mochinoki, Japan, and take a taxi to find Zatch.
The two come across a plyground in which Zatch is being tormented by a girl, Naomi. The two quarrel for a bit before Bari approaches, asking for Zatch. Zatch raises his head, and runs over to him, only to be kicked away by the older mamodo. Bari then turns to Naomi, mistaking her for Zatch, only to then be called a shithead by the young girl for his mistake. He kicks her away and goes back to Zatch, who he grabs by his head. He challenges the frightened boy to a fight at 3pm sharp the same day.
While Zatch and Kiyo prepare, Bari heads to the location of their fight, an abandoned warehouse. This warehouse was inhabited by a bunch of delinquents and their friends, only for them to be blasted away with a vortex. He's about to blast away a girl who didn't want to leave until Zatch finally shows up, and prevents him from doing anymore harm. The fight between them plays out, and it appears close, with him throwing mocking comments towards Zatch and his bookkeeper, even going as far to laying a hand on Kiyo. Kiyo is wounded, and his heart power is slowly draining, and Bari is close to his victory... until he suddenly stops in place.
Zatch stands infront of a wounded Kiyo, glaring up at Bari. Bari stares down at him, his expression morphing to one of fear as he suddenly can't move. He cannot bring himself to burn Zatch's book due to the power in his eyes, his "kingly" eyes. This moment serves as a turning point for Bari, putting an end to his hoodlum ways as he makes a deal with Zatch--Who would win--A kind king, or a strong king.
Bari has greatly changed once he appears again in the Faudo Arc. He has shown a monumental growth from his past behavior, and his sacrifice in this arc really solidifies the character development he endured. Before the vents of the Faudo arc, however, he fights a strong opponent, Elzador, one of the 4 prodigies of the mamodo world. His fight with Elzador put an end to his aimless ways, giving him a purpose in life whilst also becoming stronger.
Bari is shown to be covered in scars across his face and torso. The most notable feature about him is that he's now missing his right horn.
Bari is first mentioned by Keith, his (self proclaimed) rival back in the mamodo world. Keith uses Bari to not only hype up his arrival, but to also show off how much power he holds to be the rival of the "fearsome" Bari. Throughout Keith's fight with Zatch and co, Bari is continuously referenced--up until his anticipated arrival. Zatch mentions having "allies," and he's shown flying in with Gustav.
Bari enters through a weakpoint in Faudo's neck, drilling into it with ease. He interrupts Keith's boasting, and the atmosphere in the room soon becomes intimidating. The sight of Bari shocks everyone, especially Zatch. However, this is not the same Bari from before. As Dr. Ridddles mentions, he's much stronger, and he has matured greatly. When Zatch asks him if he came here to defeat him, Bari replies that he's only doing this for the sake of their rematch, and that he can't have Zatch getting injured before it. Keith, however, brushes this moment off and imediately goes to fighting him. Bari, of course, is much stronger than Keith, and easily defeats him with Aradomu Gouzonisu before he gets to use his strongest spell. However, Keith isn't done yet, and gets powered up by Faudo, but Bari defeats him once more with Dioga Zonisudon, effectively burning his book.
Keith is done for good--but he gets up, looking much different. Bari immedately jumps to stop whatever he has planned, but Keith is much faster. Keith pushes a button that causes a wall of high energy to come down in a last-ditch effort to keep Bari away from the others and defeat Zatch and co. Keith fades away before Bari can get a real answer out of him, and the wall begins to get closer to Zatch and his allies. Zatch steps into the barrier, sacrificing himself so everyone else can get to the exit. He asks Bari to defeat Zeno, and Bari obliges, running off to the exit--
But he ends up running back and into the barrier, towering over Zatch. He disarms the barrier with his body, protecting Zatch, and letting the others exit safely through the opening he's created. Bari has made up his mind and wants Zatch to be king, and when Zatch tries to further stall, he strikes him, yelling at him to get out. Gustav hands over his book to Sunbeam, burning it so Bari doesn't die before he returns to the mamodo world. Gustav shares a bittersweet goodbye with Bari, both of them crying and promising to never forget the other as Bari fades away.
With that, Bari is no longer a canidate to be king, but he's become a man who can strike even the king.
Zatch Bell 2 takes place 13 years after the events of Zatch Bell. A villain by the name of Beliel has inavded the mamodo world, his goal to wipe out all mamodo and take their spells. It is currently ongoing, being published monthly!! Currently, Bari is 30 years old with no current relationship status, but he's alive and (seemingly) well.
Following the invasion of the Mamodo World, Bari was one of the mamodo who came out alive. He joined the resistance against Belial and his forces, and was very vital in getting information about their invaders. First shown in a flashback recounted by Ashuron, Bari has gotten ahold of one of Beliel's soldiers, interrogating him. He forces the solider to give information about Beliel and the nature of his army, and soon finds out that it mainly consists of formerly dead creatures tha have been resurected by Beliel, having been revived inside of liquid-filled tanks and bound by orbs that Beliel has placed in them. However, when Bari tries getting more information from the solider, they suddenly explode from Beliel shattering the life orb inside of them.
Bari's physical appearance is when he shows up at the Elios Stronghold during Momon’s escape from two of Beliel's minions, Moses and Libra. He intervenes just as Moses attempts to dissect Momon, blocking the blade and punching a hole straight into Moses' stomach. Bari then praises Momon for staying strong, just like a true warrior. Bari later fights alongside Zatch and Kiyo against Moses and Libra once Ponygon is revived by Sunbeam. He withstands Libra’s onslaughts with just his fists alone, and at one point reflects Libra's attacks back at it. Even after being immobilized by one of its spells, Bari breaks free and continues throwing punches. When Moses begins to modify Libra to give it a fullbody shield, Bari lifts up the damn thing, jumps off of a tower with it, and slams it into the ground. Please note Libra is 5x his height and weight.
In the end, Bari exploits Libra’s weak point after telling it to power up to its full potential (and needing the help of Zatch and Kiyo), and stabs it in the eye which puts it out of comission. He's then seen handing over one of Moses' synringes to Elle for Momon. Later he's seen with the rest of the group creating a shelter in the snow before setting out to the Dragon Clan's fortress.
During a conversation with Kiyo, he's shown angrily demanding that they go get Gustav. This is currently the last time we see him so far. This'll be updated once we see him once more.
Gustav is an old Finnish man who ends up being Bari's bookkeeper. Bari and Gustav have the relationship of a rebelliious son and his no-nonsense father, with Gustav having Bari do chores around the house--and Bari raiding his wine cabinet when out the house. Bari does have times where he acts like a total brat, and Gustav is really one of the only ones to say something to Bari's face without fear. Bari, surprisingly, shows respect for Gustav, and doesn't snap at him like he does with anyone else.
Gustav is shown to be the voice of reason in some of Bari's actions, constantly questioning him on what he actually wants to do with himself, what goals he has and why he wants to even become king. Bari, of course, never has a concrete answer--up until his fight with Zatch. Gustav is proud to see Bari actually have a goal for this battle--to become a strong king.
.
Zatch and Bari have been rivals ever since thier first encounter, with Bari heavily underestimating Zatch's strength. However, Bari soon becomes one of Zatch's closest allies in both the Faudo arc, and Zatch Bell 2. Honestly, it's kind of pathetic how Bari, seventeen, has beef with a literal six year old, Zatch.
Bari and Zatch first meet when Bari heads to Mochinoki City looking for him. Zatch was mentioned by an opoonent he defeated in the past, and Bari wnated to test his strength for himself. He first mistakes Zatch for the girl attacking him on the playground, kicking him away--before being corrected on his mistake--and then kicking the girl away. He then grabs Zatch by his face, holding him up without a care for his well-being, and challenges him to a battle. He threatens Zatch, telling him he'll just go after his bookkeeper if he dares to run off. Zatch, scared out of his mind, immediately runs back home to Kiyo, telling him about their upcomming battle.
Bari is already at their battle location when Zatch shows up, having terrorized the students hanging out there. Zatch prevents him from basically murdering a girl before Bari turns his anger onto him. He mercilessly attacks him with spell after spell, taunting him with every hit he throws. Zatch takes both the verbal and phyical assault, clearly more focused on protecting Kiyo and the students who are still in the building than giving into any of Bari's mocks. This pisses Bari off to no avail, and he does everything in his power to ensure Zatch suffers during their fight. At one point, he goes after Kiyo, leaving the two of them bloodied up.
Zatch, still not giving up, does everything in his power to continue pushing on, even when Kiyo is barely concious. He tries going after Gustav, trying to take Bari's spellbook like that--to which Bari grabs him and throws him around like a ragdoll. He then turns to Kiyo, directing all his anger onto the already-wounded boy. Kiyo tries crushing Bari with rubble, but Bari just has to catch on, and prevents him from using the forklift. Finally nearing the end of the fight, Bari runs towards a defenseless Kiyo and Zatch, going in for the punch--when he stops in place once he sees Zatch. Zatch has his arms raised, looking up at Bari as he defends Kiyo, and Bari doesn't know what to do. He's stopped in his tracks, unable to land any hit as he looks into Zatch's eyes. Those eyes, those kingly eyes, they hold more power than a single blow from the other mamodo.
This really causes Bari to question why he can't hit him. He's much stronger than Zatch as this point, and could easily end him off, but he can't. Gustav questions him on what kind of king he'd become, and Bari replies with a strong king. Zatch, on the other hand, wants--no--will become a kind king. Their match ends in a stalemate, with Zatch and Bari making a deal; As the battle for king goes on, they'll see who becomes king, a kind king, or a strong king. This serves as a wakeup call to both of them, with Bari slowly stepping out of his hoodlum ways to work towards this goal, and Zatch still working towards becoming a kind king, with a little more motivation now.
During the Faudo arc, Bari shows up as an unexpected ally for Zatch. He flies in with Gustav, breaking into Faudo's neck and interrupting their fight with Keith. Zatch is suprised to see Bari out of all people here, but he takes note in the fact Bair looks much stronger. He asks Bari if he's here for their rematch, and Bari says that he is, but that he can't let anything happen to Zatch before their battle. Zatch notes how he looks much larger, larger than he did when they previously fought. Bari shows some care for Zatch, at least caring about his well-being for him to not want him injured before their eventual battle. IT's almost like he holds some respect for him now after the encounter. He even acknowledges Zatch's strength when talking to Keith, telling him how he will continue to become stronger to get to Zatch's level.
In the end, Bari defeats Keith, but the latter has a trick up his sleeve. Keith pushes a button which creates a barrier that traps Zatch and the others behind it. There's no way they could get past it, so Zatch stands under the barrier, using his body as a way for the others to get out. He calls out to Bari, telling him to be the one to defeat Zeon and become king. Bari is shocked, not knowing what to say for a moment before promising Zatch that he'll defeat Zeon. He runs off to the exit while the others stay by Zatch, hesitating to leave him there.
Bari ends up not going far, instead finding himself under the barrier, protecting Zatch from getting harmed further. Zatch is shocked, asking Bari what he's doing, and tellig him to go off and fight Zeon. Bari is also confused by what he's doing, and chastises himself for being weak. However, he knows Zatch is much stronger than he is, and wants him to be the one to defeat Zeon. Zatch protests, but Bari smacks him away, telling him he won't hesitate to hit him if he keeps on. Zatch runs off with the others, thankful for Bari's sacrifice for him, and the others.
Due to both the manga and anime having different interpretations of their relationship, i'll be explaining them both. The main structure of their relationship stays the same, though. Keith and Bari are introduced as rivals in the mamodo world. The very first mention of this was from Keith during his fight with Zatch and co, boasting about the fact they're rivals, and using that to gain more leverage (and show off his strength).
Please note this is probably the longest section as I love these two dearly.
Bari enters during Keith fight with Zatch and co, having broken into faudo's neck through a weakpoint. Keith is shocked, but also amused by the sight of his "rival." Bari does not show this same amusement, resenting having to see Keith again. From their last encounter, Bari has greatly matured, while Keith has stayed the same. Bari voices his annoyance towards him, saying how "seeing his face still annoys him," even with all the time they spent apart. Keith holds onto their old fight, and it is then revealed that they originally met in school, having been in the same class. Bari had seemingly transferred in, and Keith, being the bastard he is, immediately went to provoking him. This led to Keith getting beaten up by Bari and ending up greatly humiliated by this defeat. Keith had never been defeated by anyone his age, having to only be beaten by adults.
He deemed himself on the same level as the prodigies of the Mamodo world, constantly boasting about his status to the "bugs" beneath him. His defeat by bari was humbiling, and instead of growing from this, he began to hate Bari. From then on, he's made it his mission to defeat Bari and have him taste the loss he endured.
Bari finds Keith's behavior pathetic, and has moved on from whatever petty rivalry they had. He calls Keith weak to his face, and shows disdain for the other boy. He easily defeats Keith, deflecting his attacks and punching a hole through his stomach before the other boy could use his strongest spell. Keith is critically injured at this point, yet he's still concious. For once, the two actually talk, with him asking Bari about the strong demon he fought that caused this change in him. Bari mentions defeating Elzador, a known prodigy in the demon world, which causes Keith to pause. Bari then goes on to give a monolouge about how fighting a stronger opponent has truly made him grow as a person. He isn't caught up on petty losses in the past, only that he will go higher andeventually defeat them when he gets there. Keith is confused by this, saying that his only goal was to defeat Bari, and he shows genuine confusion.
But this confusion doesn't last long as Keith begs Faudo for more power, and is shown in a new form. The first thing Keith does is ask for Bari's opinion, and Bari only focuses on calling his eyes weak, which causes Keith to huff and turn to his bookkeeper for compliments. Even with Keith's powerup, he still cannot be defeated by Bari, and the latter easily defeats him. Keith is taken down by a Dioga Zonisudon, and he falls to the ground.
However, there is one thing Keith has up his sleeve. He slowly rises to his feet, and Bari, sensing something wrong, moves to tackle him into what looks like a hug, but it's no use. Keith presses a button that creates a barrier of destructive lights, and it heads for Zatch and the others. Bari runs towards keith, yelling at him for a way to stop the wall, running towads him ad wrapping his arms around him, but Keith is slowly fading from his spellbook being burned. He goes through Bari, and he seems genuinely remorseful. He looks back towards Bari, the anger in his eyes softened into remorse and berudging acceptance, and he says he never wanted to use such a horrible device. He wanted to just be beat by him fairly, and if he never got Faudo's power, this all could've been avoided.
As Keith looks back at his rival, there's a sad smile on his face, and he tells Bari that he was happy to fight him in the end, because he was once his rival. He completely fades, and later on into the same chapter, Bari sacrifices his spot to be king by stepping into the barrier, creating an opening with his body so everyone can go through. In the end, both of their spellbooks being burned were influenced by the other.
The anime takes a more lighthearted approach to their relationship. Bari shows up in the same way, coming in through Faudo's neck, but this time he's there for Momon and Kanchome's fight against Keith. Keith welcomes Bari in with open arms, even blushing slightly once he sees him. Bari, on the other hand, looks exasperated already. Keith teases him, telling him not to be embarrased as he throws a punch, to which Bari stammers and says that he isn't while throwing his own punches. The fight commences with the two exchaning spells, and at one point, they take a break and Keith starts talking about how it's great to fight Bari again, and he starts reminiscing on the time he defeated Bari--At a potato tempura eating contest.
Bari is heavily embarrased by this, and we even get a flashback to their (first date) eating contest. Bari immediately gets back into battle after growling at Keith, and the fight starts up again. Bari, of course, defeats keith with ease, but no books are burned, yay! They both live this time and escape from Faudo safely, but we don't know what happens to them from here on out since the anime ended there. Womp womp. I hope they went to go get potato tempura
They're doomed, and I love their dynamic in the manga dearly. The anime is like a happy "what-if" scenario, but it just doesn't have the gut-wrenching scenes between the two of them. Read more about their pairing in the keithbari. section.
Bari shows deep respect for Elzador, even if the dragon didn't like him at first for being the reason he lost. Elzador did get his book burned by Bari after all, and didn't take kindly to it. However, Elzador was the turning point in Bari's ways.
As seen in a special bonus chapter, Bari is very thankful for having fought Elzador, with the latter sparking a deep change within him. Elzador, however, is not pleased at all with his presence. He throws a small fit over drinking with him out all people, but Bari doesn't seem to mind. He actually tries to make conversation with Elzador, trying to find common ground, but Elzador is too busy drinking beer to care, so Bari says "fuck it" and starts drinking his wine. The two eventually end up getting drunk, and they start a round of friendly trash-talking. They then go into Elzador's past fight with fellow dragon-clan member Ashuron, and he ends up snapping at Bari.
Elzador actually starts to cry as he speaks about Ashuron, saying that he's his best friend. He then faces away from Bari, and says that Bari is a friend too. Now the both of them are crying.
He drinks red wine. Please note in the mamodo world, he's of age to drink. However, he can't handle his wine very well.
His favorite foods are fish, steak, and wood charcoal. Who is feeding this boy charcoal.
He takes good care of himself, surprisingly. He's shown on mutliple times polishing his horns.
He takes great pride in his scars, and chose to keep them instead of having them removed.
He takes after his mother, with her being the family member he's closest with.
He struggles with self-destructive behavior.
He has a weird on-and-off relationship with Keith. They eventually get together before the events of Zatch Bell 2 .... Let a girl have her Keithbari dreams .....
He was apart of the royal guard before Belial's army invaded. During this period of time, he had a rivalry with Zatch's advisor and fellow royal guard member, Arth. However, ever since Beliel invaded, he's now protecting Arth's sword with his life.
I actually don't know how he became my favorite character.
It just kind of happened, with him slowly becoming dear to me with every reread. He just has that appeal, you know? Espeically with the character growth he goes through during the Faudo arc--it's hard not to love him. You know, sort of a sidetrack but I find myself getting attached to buff guys, and he just so happens to be one. I don't know why this happes, and I potentially have some things to realize about myself in the future. Mayhaps. ANYWAYS, Bari reminds me a lot of myself--Stubborn, stuck in his ways--until being humbled greatly. I just look at him and I think "wow I really wish I were a 9 foot tall beetle man." I plead, I beg.
I find myself wanting to be him a lot, actually. He's probably the only character I feel this strongly about. The amount of gender envy I get from him is--a lot. Honestly? It's hard to put my love for him into words. I already struggle with wording thigs as is, but it's hard showing how much I appreciate him. Thank you Makoto Raiku for creating such an amazing character. Vincent Bari I love you so.
I'm by far not his biggest fan. Shoutout to that one fan on twitter who's drawn like--over a thousand pictures of him, and has like--Everything regarding him (I LOVE THEIR ITABAGS OF HIM). I aspire to reach that level one day, but for now? I'm fine with not being seen as him or his biggest fan. What matters to me is that people know how much I love him, because I do, I really do. No amount of merchandise will come close to the love I hold in my heart.
I made custom photocards of him I carry around with me in my schoolbag. I also ordered acrylic stands of him and Keith that should be coming soon... But this is my second time ordering them as SOMEONE STOLE MY PACKAGE. THEY TOOK MY STANDS. I WAITED A MONTH I'M HEARTBROKEN. IT's okay though I'll have them. Trust me.
I also ordered two plushies of him that should be coming in April. Yay!!
This will be my magnum opus. I might just make a shrine dedicated to them.
Okay, hi. KeithBari is one of my favorite pairings ever. What is KeithBari? It's in the name, a slash pairing between Keith and Bari. I thought it would be more popular, honestly, but not many see the vision. Keith and Bari start off as rivals, but I think there was a one-sided longing from keith's side, ESPECIALLY in the anime. Keith welcomes Bari in with open arms, even blushes when he greets him--yeah, there was something there between them. I feel like Bari would be oblivious to Keith's crush on him, even if the latter throws the msot obvious hints at him. If there's one thing Bari isn't good with, it's emotions.
I feel like the potato tempura eating contest was a ploy to get closer to Bari because Keith LOVES potato tempura, that's one of the main things about his character. He holds potato tempura dear to him, and the art of enjoying potato tempura is something sacred, so why would he indulge in it with his rival? He wants him, that's why.
Of course, their dynamic is also doomed in a way, especially in the manga. Their "deaths" (spellbook burnings) are influenced by eachother, and they get sent back to the mamodo realm in the same chapter. There's also the one-sidedness of their dynamic that makes it all the more tragic, with keith practically begging Bari to talk and endulge in the fight while Bari wants nothing to do with him.
there are so many songs that just… fit these two, but here are a couple from the playlist i made for them !!:
Kuuchuu Buranko, Reversible Campaign, Ihnfsa, Once More to See You, All I Ever Wanted, annnnd What Hurts The Most (Cascada ver).
My favorite song for them though is "Can't Help Falling In Love" by Elvis Presley. I feel like that signifies a lot in their relationship, especially with the two of them basically giving their lives to eachother, if that makes sense? Keith POV is where it's at. I like to think later on in the anime he sacrifices himself for Bari, wanting to make-up for that petty rivalry, and wanting nothing more than to do anything he can for Bari, especially protecting him.
